Training in Understanding and responding to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s)

When you have experienced adversity in childhood, you don’t just grow up impacted by trauma, your whole view and perspective becomes a pattern of disconnection. When we shift the focus from “What happened to you” and instead get curious about “What didn’t happen that you needed” it’s a whole different experience.

When you have experienced adversity, especially repeated adversity (Parental acrimony, compromised mental health, addiction etc) it can affect your identity, how you attach to others, how you handle stress and how you regulate emotion across your lifetime, because you see ACE’s don’t just stay in childhood, they linger and hang around in many areas of your life.

They most likely will impact your relationships, where you may develop a part of you that feels the need to people please, my role is to look after and care for others, a part that believes my value can only be seen if I am helpful or I can only be loved if I am of service, leading to things like avoidance and co-dependency.

Or you may develop a part that feels it must always be on guard, to protect self or others, on high alert with an internal dialogue of demands and criticism leading to perfectionism or fear of failure meaning you throw yourself into work to show your value, your worth with little to no self-compassion leading to what is commonly referred to as “Burnout” and most likely a diagnosis of compromised mental health through things like anxiety or depression, this can also impact our physical health through things like auto immune disorders, chronic fatigue, unexplained fatigue.

It’s a fact that people with 4 or more ACE’s are almost 3x Times likely to experience depression, 3 x more likely to experience Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and 12 x more likely to attempt suicide! These are scary facts, considering the high rates of both trauma and suicide worldwide BUT …

Here’s the good news, healing is possible, the brain and nervous system are not fixed. Healing and rewiring are possible, even if its decades later. The concept of Post Traumatic Growth PTG affords us the opportunity to identify glimmers instead of triggers. Though a moment of pause and reflection, through the breath and an acknowledgment that our bodies are free to let go, we can start thriving and growing through the wisdom gained from the period of survival that we believed was keeping us alive, it wasn’t, it was our authentic self and continuous journey of stepping into the unknown that did it, and now it’s time to flourish with this powerful offering
